Every lawn is different, but it's important to know some basics when it comes to the differences in the three major types of grass grown in the Rio Grande Valley.

Bermuda Grass: There are many strains of Bermuda but they are generally the same. The characteristics of Bermuda Grass make it an excellent type of turf for yards without any major shade. Bermuda Grass is very drought tolerant and very heat resistant. This grass only needs one inch of water each week and can withstand temperatures to 110 degrees very easily. Two major qualities that are important for growing grass in the RGV. However, Bermuda grass does have a downfall. This particular type of grass has no shade tolerance. To have a thick and green lawn, this grass needs constant sunlight. Remember not to mow to low! This will burn and damage your lawn, extensively.
St. Augustine/Carpet Grass: St. Augustine is very common for residential homes in the RGV. Like Bermuda Grass, St. Augustine can withstand high heat and is drought tolerant. St. Augustine can also be grown in areas with high salacity and is the best choice for yards with a lot of shade. The drawbacks of St. Augustine can be costly. St. Augustine is most susceptible to disease and pests, can have excessive thatch buildup, and one freeze can kill the entire grass. Having a professional stay on top of preventative problems can easily keep your St. Augustine healthy and thick. St. Augustine has many strains as well, but we only recommend Floratam. Do not mow too low!
Zoysia: There are many strains of Zoysia as well. Zoysia, or China Grass, gives a yard a very aesthetic appeal. Zoysia, to most people, has the best feel and appearance. Zoysia is drought tolerant, has some shade tolerance, has a high tolerance against heat and salt, grows deep roots, is generally pest and disease resistant, can be grown in moist soils, and has a decent durability. With such benefits comes great responsibility. This grass is the most difficult to grow and mow. Sometimes, it takes up to two years to fully develop. Remember, this grass is the most difficult to mow and maintain. If you mow too low you can easily kill the grass.
